Disc golf comes to the area
Traditional golf fans watch out -- a new version of the game has made it to the Capital Region. It's called disc golf. Instead of clubs and balls, the game uses specially designed frisbees.
Player Greg Kurtz said, "It's a lot better because instead of using other equipment, you get more control, so it's more fun."
The rules of traditional golf still apply. You take the specially designed discs and toss them at a "pole hole." If you don't get it in the first time, you move closer and putt off with a different disc.
Morgan Wright of Hyzer Creek Disc Golf Course said, "They're smaller, they're much more aerodynamic. They go about 10 times faster than a frisbee."
But until recently, there was no where to play disc golf in the Capital Region. And as a 20-year fan and player of the sport, Morgan Wright tried to get the Spa City to create one. When he realized it would take years to get the project approved, he took matters into his own hands -- and about $50,000 out of his pocket to create a 29 acre course in Galway.
Kurtz said, "It's a work in progress, but the topography and the vision is there. So it's going to be one of the best courses in the state of New York."
At present, the course has 12 holes, but that's still considered complete. The owner hopes to someday expand the course to eighteen holes.

Wright said at his course you can play for free, but if you compete in any tournament, a small fee applies. He also said he and a couple of dedicated players will be tossing these discs well into the winter.
Kurtz said, "It's easier to find your disc in snow than it is a ball, so we'll be playing longer than those guys."
