GlobalFoundries coming soon
WARREN COUNTY, N.Y. -- A seven year deal in the making seems to be just on the horizon.

And while the details are technical…

“So instead of building chips from AMD internally, we are now building semiconductor manufacturing chips for AMD as a customer as we also have the ability to go out and recruit other customers as well," said GlobalFoundries spokesman Travis Bullard.

…Warren County economic development officials say the bright spots are obvious.

"We're just talking about a huge catalyst project here. This is just the beginning," said Warren County Economic Development Corporation President Leonard Fosbrook.

"And that was originally one of the reasons why AMD was so attracted to this region. Because of the abundance of highly educated, highly skilled work force that's in the area that we can tap into," said Bullard.

Bullard says they're going to need about 1,400 people to run the facility. Everything from technicians, operators, engineers and administrative staff. On top of that, the company estimates an additional 5,000 to 6,000 jobs will open up once the plant is here.

"And those are going to come from our tool suppliers, our vendors that are going to be setting up shop in order to service the tools we use in the semiconductor manufacturing process," said Bullard.

"We'll see a lot of other businesses come to this area simply to be close to this technology," said Fosbrook.

The project's expected to take two years. Global Foundries says they're hoping to close on the land deal at Luther Forest next week and start construction this summer.
