Parents have to realize they are the drivers and the child, no matter what their wants are, desires are, they are still the passengers. We lose that a lot in situations and certainly around food, we have totally lost it. The number of overweight children in the US is staggering.

"It's an ever growing epidemic that we are seeing. Tremendous increase in obesity from infancy to thought adolescent, so across the spectrum of pediatrics," said Dr. Barbara Morris, Community Care Pediatrician.

Because of excess weight, more children are developing medical problems often only seen in adults like type-two diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea and cholesterol problems.

"A lot of growing problems, stress on knees and hips leading to a much higher incidence of orthopedic injuries in children who have over weight issues, chronic knee pain," Morris said.

According to some reports if both parents are obese, their risk of having an obese child is nearly 75 percent, potentially setting up that child up to face a life of social and medical complications.

"When they reach the absolute obesity stage, then it begins to contribute to problems with self esteem, the depression that comes with that. A much higher incidence in adolescent depression," Morris said.

Less traditional dinner time has been replaced with 'on the go' fast food. Exercise is less as more kids are sedentary, playing video games and watching more television.

"Kids eventually will follow patterns they are given. They may not always be happy. They have to be allowed to be unhappy to be good parents and food and good parenting is so intertwined in people's minds these days," Morris said.
