What will Albany look like in 20 years?

By: Solomon Syed

Flying cars, underwater apartments, maybe even a monorail? That might be your idea of what Albany will look like in the year 2030, but a group of city residents are getting together this weekend to help plan what the future holds for Albany in 20 years. Our Solomon Syed has more.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- What will Albany look like 20 years from now? More than 75 residents are trying to answer that question at this weekend's Albany 2030 community forums.

"We've had over 1,000 people involved in the process through various means," said Albany Planning Director Douglas Melnick. "It's been pretty uniform, people want a safe community."

Right now, they're trying to hammer out the broad policy goals, but they hope transform those ideas into artist's renderings by the end of the summer. And by next spring.

"The plan needs to be ratified by the common council and it won't be just policy goals, it will be a plan of implementation that we can revisit on a yearly basis to see exactly how we're doing," said Melnick.

One of the main objectives is tapping into the $150 million in high speed rail funds New York State will receive from the federal government in order to develop...

"A better transportation system, some type of light rail system that will ease the congestion in Albany and help the community," said Albany 2030 participant Paul Stewart.

But until that train pulls into the station, organizers set up a website full of updates on the planning process and information on how you can host a planning party in your own home.

"I think [Albany] can be a wonderful city. It's the state capital, which gives it all kinds of advantages culturally that other cities don't have in upstate New York," said Kelly Bush of the Center Square Association.
