MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. -- You may know him as the lead singer of the Grammy award winning group Matchbox Twenty. But now musician Rob Thomas and his wife Marisol are being honored for their work with animals.
The couple was awarded the Pets Alive Starfish award, which honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions that benefit the no-kill shelter.
A specially designed gate was unveiled in honor of the couple's recently deceased dog Tyler, who was adopted from Pets Alive in 2004.
"They've done a tremendous amount," said Pets Alive Executive Co-Director Kerry Clair. "The first two years after we took over here at Pets Alive, it was pretty much of a disaster here about four years ago, and when they stepped in they gave us a huge amount of money to keep us going, and then for two years following they did the same thing."
"All it takes is a little time and a little effort and you find that now some of these animals have great homes now," said Rob Thomas. "And we get all the feedback from all the families and we hear about the lives that they're having."
Pets Alive Animal Sanctuary is one of the oldest and largest no-kill sanctuary's in the U.S. Its mission is to improve the lives of companion animals.
