As a parent, most of us have seen our kids seem a bit down. maybe a bit depressed. According to pediatrician Dr. Manny Cirenza, running to make an appointment with a therapist, may not be the best idea.

"All of our children, as they grow and develop, are going through many stages from toddlerhood to childhood to adolescence and right into to adulthood, they are going to struggle with the psychological well being," said Cirenza.

Parents should talk to the pediatrician before making a child sit thought a psychological assessment.

"When parents bring the child to the office setting and like an intervention, where the child is blindsided and I don't think that is a good idea at all. I think you should be open with them and tell them exactly what is going on," said Cirenza.

It's not uncommon for parents to struggle with their child at home, but get glowing reports at school. It may only be a temporary issue at home that needs to be addressed. The tall tell sign there is much more brewing, is when your child shows behavior, like anger or isolation more often.

Good and bad days come and go rather quickly but there can be signs things are headed down a different path and are a little bit more serious, often times you will see problems with their grades or their social interactions.

"Are they engaged in activities with their friends? Are they engaged in sports, clubs and have interests," Cirenza said.

Most schools have psychologists on the school grounds... they can be helpful if there is a good connection but there's a caveat.

"The school psychologist can be helpful but you have to see exactly what that individual is going to be able to do for you. They are potentially seeing gads and gads and gads of kids and limited amount of time in a restricted setting and so you're not really may not get out of that what you are looking for," said Cirenza.
