SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Students from around the world participate in an interactive Global Online Town Hall meeting to gauge kids' attitudes toward math and science.

It's part of Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds initiative, which encourages school programs designed to boost learning in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Former Vice President Al Gore talked education via video conference as part of the event.

Educators say now is the time to get students more interested in these fields because even locally it's where the good jobs are going to be in the future.

Associate Professor Paul Schoch of RPI said, "I think if you look in the younger grades, the interest level is across the board. What kid is not interested in playing with technology, with Legos, with their iPhone, whatever. I think that the opportunity is in the middle school high school and start diverting students. I think we have to offer more opportunities and make this very broad. We cannot have parts of society that don't have the stimulus, the support, the coaching that they need to follow these fields."
