TROY, N.Y. -- The City of Troy, RPI and United Group celebrated the grand opening of a newly constructed five-level student housing facility.

The building, called College Suites at City Station West, is located on Sixth Avenue.

Construction for the 100,000 square foot, $16 million building began this past February.

The first floor of the building will house retail space, such as restaurants, coffee shops and other local businesses. The upper four floors have 48 apartments with room for 184 RPI students.

Mayor Harry Tutunjian says the housing facility is a great addition to the community.

"It's safe, it's new, it's clean. Another added benefit of this project it helps de-densify our neighborhoods. A lot of college students were living in neighborhoods, taking up parking spaces. Now they have their own modern place to call home, it's close to downtown, it's close to school, so it's a win-win all the way around," Tutunjian said.

Tutunjian says plans for a second student housing building are already in the works.
