SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – It was pushed back a day due to severe weather, but that didn't take anything away from Schenectady County Community College's unveiling on Wednesday.

The college, along with local business United Group, held the official ribbon cutting for the brand new College Suites at Washington Square.

United Group built the $11 million student housing facility in under two years. The facility is a 264 bed facility with a community kitchen, a flight simulator and a fitness center, among other amenities, all of which officials hope will increase enrollment at the school.

"That will allow Schenectady to draw students, specifically from outside the region, for the first time to their great programs, their culinary, music, aeronautics. These are programs that they want to hype up and we're going to help them," said Jeff Buell, United Group of Companies Development Executive.

"This housing project allows them to live in a control environment, very safe. And they can take advantage of our academic programs," said Denise Murphy McGraw, SCCC Board of Trustees chair.

Buell says there were, in fact, many heavy hearts at the ribbon cutting. This, after the United Group lost its founder and vice chairman tragically in a plane crash last month. Buell says he's proud of the team effort that made the suites possible.
