ALBANY, N.Y. -- We could know the Albany mayor's choice for police chief as early as Friday. Mayor Jerry Jennings says he's close to a decision on which of the four men nominated by his search committee will make it to the next round.
Jennings' choice must then be confirmed or vetoed by the common council because of a change to the charter several years ago. The mayor had originally said he'd name his pick by the end of last month.
"There's no delay, I'm just being very deliberate in what I do and I also have other things going on in this job- like trying to get the state leg to understand it's important to pass some leg for the city, so there are other things going on," Jennings said.
Sources tell YNN that Acting Chief Steven Krokoff is a favorite within the Albany County District Attorney's office and other local law enforcement agencies, as well as members of the common council.
But the other nominees bring decades of experience to the job. John King is a former Chief of Police in Gaithersburg, Maryland. John Pikus is the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albany Field Office. Jamie Fields is a former Deputy Chief of the Detroit Police Department.
All have interviewed one on one with Jennings.
