ALBANY, N.Y. -- Acting Albany Police Chief Steven Krokoff is Mayor Jerry Jennings' choice to replace James Tuffey. Krokoff has been acting chief since Tuffey retired in September.

Tuffey retired amid allegations he used a racial slur in a conversation with his assistant chief.

Krokoff was one of four finalists chosen by the police chief selection committee. The Albany Common Council will now confirm or reject the mayor's choice.

Krokoff said, "I am honored to have been selected by Mayor Jennings to become the next Albany Police Chief. I recognize that the Mayor has been extremely thorough in making this selection and I look forward to the next stage of confirmation by the Common Council. "

In a statement, Jennings said, "I am absolutely certain that Chief Krokoff is the best qualified individual to lead the Albany Police Department. He has the proven leadership skills, experience and intellect that will ensure his success as Police Chief."

Now the Common Council has to confirm the pick, which shouldn't be an issue given that several members endorsed Krokov both publicly and privately during the search.

"Steve has taken the department in a good direction moving forward on community policing and other initiatives, and I think he can do more as chief than as acting chief," says Richard Conti, Council Member from the 6th Ward.

Krokoff must now be approved by the Council within the next 45 days.
