The Democratic National Convention kicks off today in Charlotte, with Obama, Romney neck-and-neck in the national polls.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney leads President Barack Obama in North Carolina by four points.

In the latest Elon Poll released Monday at the Democratic National Convention, Romney is ahead, 47 percent to 43 percent.

The poll also asked likely voters their opinion on the following issues:

Better job of handling the economy
Romney: 52 percent
Obama: 39 percent

Better job at foreign relations
Romney: 41 percent
Obama: 47 percent

Most closely shares their values
Romney: 48 percent
Obama: 45 percent

Going into the DNC, which begins today, RealClearPolitics averaged the national polls, showing Obama and Romney in a dead heat in the presidential race.

That means that Romney didn't get much of a bump coming out of the RNC and Obama has a job to do in Charlotte to stir up his base.

The Democrats' talking points out of Charlotte are clear: The economy has been better under Obama, but there is still a ways to go.

The Republicans' rebuttal: Are you better off now then you were four years ago? Obama's had four years to turn things around, it's time for a change.
