VATICAN CITY -- Pope Francis completes his inauguration as pontiff during a ceremony on Sunday.

He was installed as the new bishop of Rome.

Thousands of people gathered in Saint Peter’s Square for the ceremony.

In his weekly blessing, the pope told the crowd, “Don't be afraid to be Christians.”

This completes his inauguration as the head of the Catholic Church.

VATICAN CITY -- Pope Francis is leading his first Easter Sunday mass as leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

Tens of thousands packed Saint Peter's Square to hear the pope deliver his sermon and prayers.

This is the holiest day on the Christian calendar.

After the communion rite, the pontiff gives his "Urbi et Orbi" blessing to the faithful in the square and around the world.

"And so we ask the risen Jesus, who turns death into life, to change hatred into love, vengeance into forgiveness, war into peace,” said the pope.

That is always a high point in the papal mass on Easter.

The newly-elected pope has had a very busy schedule with holy week activities.

VATICAN CITY -- Pope Francis is getting ready to celebrate his first Easter as Pontiff.
Saturday, he'll lead an Easter Vigil at the Vatican.

Friday night, Pope Francis led a candlelit procession around the Colosseum, for the Way of the Cross ceremony.

The ceremony retraces the steps of Jesus carrying the cross to his crucifixion.

Pope Francis, known for his simplicity and humility, broke with tradition Thursday and washed the feet of young detainees at a youth detention center.

It's a tradition that mirrors Jesus' washing his disciples' feet.

The current and former pontiffs met Saturday at Castel Gandolfo, the summer villa where Benedict is living temporarily. Since resigning last month he is the first pope to give up the throne of the Church in 600 years.

This is also first such meeting in the church's recorded history, since a new pope is usually only elected after his predecessor's death.

Vatican officials say Francis told Benedict "we're brothers" before praying together on the same kneeler.

Beyond that, officials would not comment on what the two men discussed during their 45 minute meeting in the library, but Francis did present Benedict with a gift -- an icon of Our Lady of Humility.

In the coming weeks Benedict is expected to move from Castel Gandolfo to a converted monastery in the Vatican gardens.

CASTEL GANDOLFO, ITALY -- For the first time in 600 years, two popes will sit down for lunch on Saturday. Pope Emeritus Benedict the 16th and Pope Francis meet at Castel Gandolfo.

It's been just over a week since Pope Francis became the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

It took the college of Cardinals two days to elect the former arch-bishop from Argentina.

It's the start of a busy week for Pope Francis, as the Catholic church begins holy-week before Easter next Sunday.

Benedict became the first pope to step down in 600 years in February.

The vatican is downplaying the luncheon; but presumably, the two will be discussing the future of the Catholic Church.
