Gun buyback initiative to expand countywide

By: Kaitlyn Ross

The Albany County Legislature is expected to approve a $10,000 grant to expand the gun buyback program in Albany to the entire county. The Victory Church on Quail Street has been running the program since the death of 10-year-old Kathina Thomas in May and our Kaitlyn Ross found out just how successful they've been.

Gun buyback initiative to expand countywide
ALBANY COUNTY, N.Y. -- Reverend Charlie Muller said, “We had one lady who turned in a gun, she had bought the gun to kill her husband, ok? This is a true story. So do you think we stopped a crime there? I think we might've!"

That loaded .38 was just one of 60 guns that have been turned in since the program started in late May. In fact, the gun buyback deal has become so popular, Muller has had to turn down a number of guns because they just don't have the money to take them all.

Muller said, "I've turned down guns. We're not taking any broken, junk guns. We're not taking rifles. Right now, we're just taking dangerous handguns off the street."

One of them, a TEC-9, which is a semi-automatic weapon, is referred to as a little uzi.

"I'm not an expert on guns, but that one was very dangerous. We've taken some very dangerous guns off the street," Muller said.

In exchange for turning in the guns, people get a $150 gift card to Crossgates Mall. But now that the program is going countywide, there will also be an option for Colonie Center.

Albany County Legislator Gary Domalewicz said, "I want to make sure that anyone who comes in, they get $150 gift certificate. We want to get those guns off the streets of Colonie, of Cohoes, of Watervliet, of Colonie."

Though it's not just the gift cards they're spending money on. The legislature will also allocate $70,000 to advertising to get the word out about the program."

“This is a step in the right direction. Anytime we can get a gun off the street, it's one less youth death in the city of Albany," said Albany County Legislator Christopher Higgins.

Reverend Muller estimates that with this money, he can get 66 guns off the street. And the legislature says they'll be happy to come back with more money after he spends this grant.
