Animal mutilation under investigation
AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- Behind 82 Prospect Street is where neighbors found the mutilated animal. They're calling the act sick and twisted. Now they want justice.

Lyman Barlett made the gruesome discovery. Pulling back a wooden slab he showed us the exact location.

"I pulled that off and then it looked like a bag of blankets," said Barlett."

What he found wasn't dirty laundry. Instead it was a mutilated dog, wrapped in sweaters and stuffed in a clear bag.

According to police someone dumped the animal here.

"We found that it had some paws severed. The tail had been severed. And there were several parts of its torso that appeared to have been burned with something like a blow torch," said Sergeant Patrick Miller of the Amsterdam Police Department.

Across the street discover sight, neighbors are stunned.

"When we saw what they pulled out it was horrifying for me," said Chris Turnbull.

She still can't shake the dog's image from her memory.

"I never thought this would happen on our street. This neighborhood since we lived here is a great neighborhood. But then to come across the mutilated dog it, like, devastated us all on the street, that someone would do something like that to an animal," she said.

Even for police, the crime has left a chilling effect.

"To me it seems that this individual certainly has issues. Whoever did it has to have issues that need to be addressed. The fact of the matter is, I've been doing this for some 27 years and haven't seen abuse of this type," said Sergeant Miller.

Police say they do have a person of interest, but so far that person has not been located. Cops are asking that he or she, turn themselves in.
