Chicken wing shortage?

Chicken wing shortage?
NEW YORK STATE -- From Buffalo to Rochester, the demand for chicken wings is high. And with Super Bowl Sunday just days Away, the demand has doubled. The problem: the wing capital of New York State is dealing with a wing shortage.

“I got to have my bee-sting wings here, especially on Super Bowl Sunday," said wing lover Mark
Kanellis.

Most restaurants have already stocked up, but it came at a high price.

When Pilgrim’s Pride, a major producer of chicken wings nationwide, went bankrupt last month, it caused an industry wide shortage. Restaurants like The Distillery and Jeremiah's Tavern are used to paying 20 percent more to their suppliers around Super Bowl time. This year, they're paying 30 percent more. Most restaurants are not raising their prices, but say they'll have to if this trend continues.

"That's a worry. Usually in February, they come down when the demand lessens and if they don't, then we'll have to revaluate our price structure," said Timothy Clark of Jeremiah’s Tavern.

"There is a shortage, but if you plan ahead with your supplier, as we did, you'll have plenty of product," said Peter Psyllos, owner of The Distillery.

In Buffalo, some pizza places are calling for a chicken wing boycott until the price comes down.

Despite the shortage, pizza places and local bars and restaurants are still offering wing specials. They say in this economy, passing the costs on to the consumer is not realistic.
