Albany River Rats bus crashes on Massachusetts Turnpike
BECKET, Mass. -- "As quick as this happened, it also felt like it was going in slow motion...just to watch everything happen and to get up and kind of lose track of where you were or where you were on the bus, because the bus was pretty messed up."

Albany River Rats Coach Jeff Daniels reacts after the AHL team's bus hit a guard rail and rolled onto its side on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Becket around 3 a.m. Thursday. The team had been in Lowell for a game against the Devils Wednesday night and were returning to Albany when the crash happened.

"All 29 people on the bus were able to walk off the bus," said Daniels. "We kind of gathered in the middle between two highways. It was dark. The snow was falling. We had no idea where we were at. We were on the highway somewhere."

Four players and their color commentator will be spending the night at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. None of the injuries are life-threatening, but some of the players do have cuts, bruises and broken bones.

Daniels said, "To see the guys that were in pain, through the cuts, and some of the guys limping, some guys were concussed. At that point, the fire trucks and police and everyone got onto the scene probably within 20, 25 minutes."

The coach said everyone on the bus is expected to be okay physically, but it will take time to process everything that happened.

"Be a team, and be a family, and be together," said Daniels. "And, again, I'm sure some guys will have some nightmares over this. It's a tough situation that's going to take some time to get over."

The accident is under investigation, but State Police said slippery roads caused by overnight snow may have been a factor.
