RPI students protest housing increases
TROY, N.Y. -- RPI students in Troy held a peaceful demonstration over several issues including what the students claim will be a 15 percent increase in housing costs and changes in sophomore housing requirements and resident assistant compensation.
The rally was called "Uprise at 5" held at the Russell Sage Dining Hall to get the attention of the RPI board of trustees who were inside having dinner.
"Over the past four or five years, we've seen different events that should have been dealt differently at RPI, most recently, changes in RA compensation as well as changes to the RA hiring process and that was sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back,” said RPI senior Kara Chesal.

The RPI Administration issued a statement saying they've reached out consistently to student leaders, the student newspaper and other student groups to discuss issues affecting student life.
RPI says the majority of students will only see an increase of three to four percent in housing costs.
