STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. -- "Extremely difficult. It's painful for the community, it's painful for so many people," said third grade teacher Mary Berle.

State budget woes are hitting home. The Berkshire Hills Regional School District is cutting seven teaching jobs and three staff positions in order to close a $622,000 budget deficit.

"It's hard on morale, it's hard on young people, it's hard on staff, it's hard on parents and families," said Superintendent Peter Dillon.

The layoffs follow Governor Deval Patrick's midyear cuts to regional school transportation, which amounted to a loss of almost $400,000 for the district.

Yet, Dillon says the community is rallying. All staff has agreed to take furloughs and even students are pitching ideas to help.

"Students are using Facebook as an opportunity to engage in dialogue about this," he said.

And even the bus company is pitching in, giving back $22,000 that the school owed to help close the budget gap.

Still, for 1,400 students, the cuts spell the end for some computer classes and deals blows to English language, music and foreign language courses.

"For those of us who really care about delivering the best possible education, it's really difficult," said Berle.

It's a trickle down affect from Beacon Hill, to Berkshire County.
