BETHLEHEM, N.Y. -- We have an update on a story we first reported on Wednesday.

A suspended police dispatcher is returning to work in the town of Bethlehem, and that's sparking tensions in the town. At a press conference Thursday, Town Supervisor Sam Messina announced he will not seek re-election for a second term.

But during his statement, he was interrupted by a disgruntled former police officer who's upset the town is allowing suspended dispatcher Eric Kerr to come back to work.

Kerr was put on disciplinary leave for 30 days following several complaints about his behavior.

He allegedly used profanity, threw things and threatened fellow co-workers.

Police are installing cameras in the dispatcher unit to monitor Kerr.

Messina refused further comment on the issue, and that sparked a heated exchange.

"Some of the dispatchers put it in writing that they were afraid to work with him," said Retired Bethlehem Police Officer Christopher Hughes. "They felt the town's response to that was inadequate."

Supervisor Samuel Messina said, "As supervisor, I see that one as a personnel matter that is being attended to. I'm aware of all of the issues there, and with the chief I am working on that."

Meanwhile, Messina will step aside when his current term expires at the end of the year.
