Bicyclist killed in multi-county chase

CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- A man is facing manslaughter and DWI charges after hitting a man during a police chase through several cities and towns.

Pablo Cruz of Schenectady was speeding down Central Avenue in Colonie when a sheriff's deputy spotted him. Cruz sped away to Albany, where he hit a bicyclist who got pinned to the ladder rack of the truck. Cruz continued to drive away until his car engine died in Rotterdam and he was taken away by the police.

Police say they've never dealt with anything like this.

"We don't want to get engaged in a high speed chase, but due to the nature of having a human being hanging from the vehicle, we felt it was necessary to pursue the vehicle," Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said.

Cruz was also on parole. He was released from prison earlier this month.

The victim has not yet been identified.
