Handling the computer and your kids

By: Capital News 9 web staff

Kids today are growing up in an increasingly connected society. A new survey shows nearly half of all kids 7 to 12 go online at least four times a week, and almost 20 percent log on everyday.

Mike Migdall a computer user said, "I spend most of my time on the computer playing video games or doing school work."

That's what most kids say. The survey found 87 percent play games online, and 60 percent use the net for homework help. About 63 percent listen to music online, and just over half email each other. The most popular topic? What they did that day.

Is all this web use too much for kids? Well, it depends on the child, and what they're doing online.

It's important for parents to know what young people are up to and set limits -- as they can with KOL, the new AOL service that gives kids the content they want and parents the peace of mind of need.

Parent Robin Willis said, "It's nice to know that the safety features are there so don't get into trouble or into places they shouldn't be."

Experts urge parents to talk with children about staying safe on the net, and the survey found they're doing just that.

Malcolm Bird from AOL said, "If you are going to be doing all that stuff, you have to be in a safe environment."

As for who's the real computer whiz at home -- kids had a surprising answer. More than 60 percent said mother knows best when it comes to handling the computer.
