Sexual predators luring children online

Sexual predators luring children online
Over the last six years, there are 20 million more children surfing the web. With this increase, State Police say sexual predators are on the hunt and your child is more at risk now than ever before. They are out there, sexual predators, looking for young children.

"There is no stereotype. Unfortunately this is a wide base problem. It's lawyers, judges, doctors, police officers, priests, garbage men, gas station attendants and unemployed people," said Lt. Joseph Donahue with the New York State Police Internet Crimes Task Force.

With computers and the unknown, there are more children being targeted and abducted by sexual predators.

"Our home is our castle. Cops can't come into your house without a search warrant, they feel very safe there. So if I'm a predator and I am in my house, I can feel that I can be as blatant and aggressive as I want because most of these kids aren't going to report to anybody," Donahue said.

They're found in innocent gaming sites as innocent as checkers so as a parent, you must be the watch dog.

"They are at every site. There's no such thing as a safe site. They're not going to go a sex club site and look for kids. They are going to go to a gaming site and the kids not going to expect to be approached or thought he might be groomed while he's talking to these people in the gaming site. He's going to think he's with likeminded people and talk about the games," said Donahue.

With Facebook and MySpace so popular, more information is getting to the predators, even a child's first name, age and the name of their the school is enough to pin point exactly where they live.

"Nowadays with map quest and these online services you don't have to be a secret agent to track somebody down online and to find out where they are. Be careful with what you say or what you do because you can put yourself in a situation and be victimized," Donahue said.

Because kids are becoming so computer savvy, many can out smart their parents if you don't know what POS stands for, parent over shoulder, you need to educate yourself. Go online yourself, take a class or just sit with your child and let them teach you.

"A kid will be more than happy to show mom or dad how much smarter they are at something. And as long as you let them think that's why you're sitting down there, hey I need some help with something for my office, can you show me how to research this, while they are there doing all this stuff you are seeing how good they are at it and getting an idea of what they are doing when they are online," Donahue said

Teach your child what to look for, predators are excellent at gaining trust through what's called grooming.

"You can get and start taking to somebody and start slowly to earn their trust. Grooming is basically earning a trust or earning to the point where the kids trust you and maybe you become a dominating figure. Maybe you become their 'new parent,' or you become their friend. Come with me, live with me, you can have ice cream for dinner, eat cookies in bed, watch TV all day because your parents are telling you can't do that," Donahue warned.

Protect your kids with knowledge. Ask questions, know passwords and keep home computers in common areas.
