In 2008, the recession caused the housing market to plummet. In this edition of Your Home, YNN's Solomon Syed has more on how it impacted the custom home building market as well.
"One of the things that has happened since 2008 and up until about this year, has been a lot people who may have started purchasing a home back in 09, 10, 11, and 12 instead wound up renting," said Sam Palazzole, Saratoga Builders. "These individuals have now come to the realization that one they would prefer to own their own home and secondly you're building up equity."
According to the latest figures, construction and permits for construction have seen an increase recently.
"If I were to generalize, I would say that the young couple starting out who either have their first child or are planning on having children typically will go with a two story second floor master so that they can be on the same level as their child," said Palazzole. "If I go to the other end of the spectrum, those individuals who are downsizing, those people generally speaking are going towards the ranch with first floor master."
No matter where people are putting the bedrooms, there are certain features that continue to be popular on the inside of homes.
Palazzole said, "Clearly people love open floor plans, they love big kitchens, many people have the experience that their friends and family like to congregate around the kitchen."
As for the exterior of new construction projects, the choices are vast.
He said, "Most people would like maintenance free materials used and we do. And the assortment and availability of siding styles and colors today, I've never had a customer say to me 'gee you couldn't find the color I was interested in.'"
If you're looking to build, it's best sit down with a few different builders, and interview them to find out which one will suit your needs and wants for your new home.
