Building a brand new custom home comes with a hefty price tag. In this edition of Your Home, YNN's Solomon Syed explains the challenge of building a quality home while trying to save money.
"As a affordable luxury builder, what we're doing is we're taking the integrity and design of very high end expensive homes and repackaging it in a form that is affordable to a much broader range of people," said Peter Belmonte, Belmonte Builders.
Getting the best bang for your buck is the goal, especially when it comes to amenities. However, some amenities translate better than others under this particular model of building.
"Amenities include extensive amounts of glass, very nice features such as special elements in kitchens, countertop materials, feature and design. In this particular home we have a sleeping porch and we've done it in an affordable configuration that people have fallen in love with," said Belmont. "There is an endless array of details that people ask for and hope for from the large luxury homes, but just want it packaged in a way that is much more affordable."
With the ability to modify building plans to suit many needs, the affordable luxury model is not targeted at any specific buyer.
Belmonte noted, "Younger couples with growing families obviously are burdened with enough expenses that the house can't be the only thing their spending their money on. Empty nesters: it may be a home resizing to. And it works in all brackets: age, price range, size of homes. Everyone wants a little bit more for a little bit less."
Whether you are interested in a ranch or colonial, this type of custom home can be built for any style.
"Frequently we have to create the space for the special niches. We have to identify where we want to add these elements, such as built ins or coffee bars. It does lead to some alternate designs in kitchen layouts," said Belmonte.
Throughout process there are going to be tradeoffs. It is best to discuss with your builder your list of wants and needs before drafting any plans.
