Although it doesn’t always happen, my family and I try to vacation in Cape Cod for a week during the summer. There’s always plenty to do (or not do) on those summer trips, but I’ve often wondered how the experience would be “off season.”
This past weekend I found out that, for the most part, it’s a LOT quieter in October than it is in August on the Cape, but I did get to witness big crowd of people at the annual Wellfleet Oyster Festival.
I’d been told it is an event not to miss, but I always assumed it wouldn’t happen for me because it’s always in October. Well, the timing worked out this year and the oysters were sublime. They don’t get any fresher than this!
Well, as you can see, it certainly takes over the town and the supply of the famous and delicious Wellfleet oysters somehow seems to keep with the demand for the two day event.
There are crews shucking oysters non-stop with people buying them up as soon as they’re ready to go and the oyster shucking contest pitting the best against the best draws a huge and enthusiastic crowd.
It’s a long drive for the experience but, if you love oysters and happen to be heading in that direction in October, the Wellfleet Oyster Festival is worth the trip!
