The ship’s whistle onboard the Disney Magic immediately sets the playful tone for this cruise, the first Disney ship ever to sail out of the Big Apple.

As a media guest recently invited on its inaugural Canadian voyage, I wanted to see how much Magic I could fit into a New York minute.

If you thought New York City had all the characters, you’ll meet some new pals. You'll also be treated to a boatload of other activities for kids ages 3 to 17.

Take a swim in any of three pools and twist down a water slide as part of Mickey’s splash zone; mangia on everything from Mickey Mouse waffles to mushroom risotto; and enjoy unlimited soft drinks or treat yourself to a specialty cocktail.

As for the kids, rest assured they are in good hands.

Take in a Broadway-style show with familiar Disney entertainment; watch first-run movies the same time your friends are seeing them at home; and explore interesting ports of call.

It's all hands on deck matey’s for the weekly Pirates in the Caribbean theme party followed by a big blast from the only fireworks show at sea.

With all this activity, don’t forget to relax.

This well-worn and beloved ship, the oldest of the Disney fleet, is testing the waters with 20 voyages from Manhattan this summer with no plans to come back next year.

Besides the five-night Canada cruise, there are two other options out of New York City through September: Two more weekend getaways that are almost sold out, and
eight nights to the Bahamas including a visit to Disneyworld.
