Celebrating the New Year is one of the few almost completely universal events, taking place on almost every spot on the globe where there are people, crossing nearly all cultural, religious and ethnic boundaries. Each year, as we get more and more immersed in a digital world, the celebration itself becomes more global.
Two big names trying to advance that goal in 2013 are Instagram and Google.
First, Instagram, the popular app and website for quickly taking then sharing pictures, usually with some sort of funky filter, has launched Instagram.com/NYE. It's culling a whole bunch of pictures taken on New Year's Eve from around the world and then organizing them based on time zone.
As the user clicks on the bar down below, he or she will see the time zone, plus countries in that time zone that have photos included. Simply click a photo to see where it was taken, who took it and even comment on it.
To get a look into the future at what folks around the globe plan to do this new year, Google on its "Zeitgeist 2012" page has put up a giant map where users can post and view new year's resolutions from around the globe. They are color-coded by category: Love, Health, Career, Finance, Family, Education, Do Good and Other.
To enter their own resolution, users can click on the bottom, type it in and enter their country and zip code. Each participant is represented by a dot on the map.
The Google resolutions map is available at google.com/zeitgeist/2012/resolutions.
