We've covered a lot of ground here on "Your Home" when it comes to real estate and home improvement, but we haven't talked about the different and more popular styles of homes out there. We spoke with developer Frank Barbera for his take on what's trending right now.

“The most common types of homes that we see are your traditional colonial, the first floor ranch is also very popular, as well as first floor master style homes,” said Frank Barbera, custom home builder.

Barbera points to a direct correlation between housing trends and the economy. Gone are the days of bigger is better.

“I have noticed a trend with the changing economy. Actually, we saw the trend in housing first, then we saw the change in the economy. Truth be told, I wish I could have seen the economy coming first. What we're seeing is a trend towards smaller homes and more well thought out, well planned space in these types of homes,” said Barbera.

Despite a continued nationwide lull in the housing market and new construction neighborhoods, which is what Barbera specializes in, are faring rather well around the state and they have their advantages.

One of the biggest benefits when you're looking at new construction in a development like this is, that no matter what style of house you're looking for, you can have it. Then you're able to customize it and build your dream home.

“Years ago we really just had vinyl siding to choose from and the whole neighborhood would look the same with a half-dozen colors. Manufacturers have come out with new designer colors. We also have vinyl shakes, board and batten that we can put on the houses to break them up. You mix those with a little bit of cultured stone, some architectural shingles and you really can create a beautiful look at a reasonable price,” said Barbera.

Take the time to review different styles and floor plans. Measure each against your family's needs and you'll find that your dream home really is within reach.
