Syracuse head basketball coach Jim Boeheim speaks publicly about the situation surrounding his former assistant Bernie Fine following a game Tuesday night. The university fired Fine Sunday following allegations he abused two ball boys when they were teens. Boeheim talked on camera for the first time Tuesday night since Fine's termination. SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Jim Boeheim was quick to notice all the media attention in the pressroom at the Carrier Dome Tuesday night. "This was the first time there were more people in the press room than the actual game," said Boeheim.
After summing up his team’s performance on the court, Boeheim admitted it was difficult to put everything into words. He said he is saddened by the events that have unfolded, but said he supports the investigation that is underway.
"When the investigation is done, we will find out what happened on my watch. We don't know what's happened on my watch right now, there is an investigation underway, there are no charges, there are no indictments, there is no grand jury, there is no action being taken. When that is done, then we will see what has happened on my watch," said Boeheim.
Advocates for sex abuse victims say Boeheim should resign or be fired for adamantly defending Bernie Fine and saying he believed the two original accusers were lying. He says he doesn't regret backing Fine when the allegations were first made public.
"I supported a friend, that's what I thought I did. I'm proud that I did. I think if you've known somebody and worked with somebody for 36 years, known them for 40 years, you went to school with them, I think you owe a debt of allegiance and gratitude for what he did for the program, and that's what my reaction was," said Boeheim.
SU Chancellor Nancy Cantor spoke out Tuesday in support of Jim Boeheim following an event in Albany, saying "he's our coach." We also learned Tuesday that a fourth person has come forward, claiming Bernie Fine molested him, according to a priest associated with a victims support group.
