LEE, Mass. -- Lee Police Chief Joseph Buffis was fired on Tuesday night after the Town Board of Selectmen meeting.
Buffis is accused of misappropriating public funds, and now faces charges of extortion and money laundering.
In August, Buffis was indicted for allegedly extorting thousands of dollars from people who were facing prostitution charges. According to police, Buffis deposited $4,000 into a charitable fund controlled by him. He later withdrew nearly all of the money.
If convicted, Buffis could face a maximum of 20 years in prison for each count. There is no word on who will serve as Buffis' replacement.
