LEE, Mass. -- A selectmen in Lee is speaking out following the firing of Police Chief Joseph Buffis.
Buffis was fired during Tuesday night's meeting after accusations he misappropriated public funds for personal use. He is accused of billing the town of cell phones used by his wife and grown children.
Selectmen David Consolati released a statement, "The usage of the cellphones for Buffis' wife and two children was not authorized under Buffis' contract. This had nothing to do with his other charges, his indictment. He has a right to court and is innocent until proven guilty."
Buffis is also facing a federal extortion and money-laundering charges, after investigators say he coerced money from two people under investigation for running a prostitution ring.
