WESTTOWN, N.Y.-- State Police are continuing their search for the hit and run driver on County Route 1 in Westtown.
According to police, Donald Wester, 86, was outside checking his mailbox Monday around 5 p.m. when a SUV driving down County Route 1 towards Warwick hit him and didn’t stop.
"We feel fairly certain that whoever hit this man knows that they did and left the scene after they did it," said Major Patrick Regan with New York State Police.
Investigators said Wester suffered significant injuries to his head and spine and was rushed to the Westchester Medical Center, where he later died. Police said they are now focused on finding the driver.
"We believe it to be operated by a white female with longer hair," said Regan.
Officials said they are looking for a small silver or gray SUV, possibly a 2006 or 2007 Subaru Tribeca, which may be missing a part of the passenger side mirror.
Police said it's unclear if the driver was speeding at the time of the crash, but Cathy Weber, who knows Wester, said she hopes something like this won't happen again.
"I think they need to put more signs and stuff and caution along here so nothing like that happens," said Weber.
