For many people, Labor Day is an extra day off from work, but for others it's a day of shopping. According to retail stores, the three day weekend is the last major sale before the holiday shopping season. YNN's Jennifer Serda reports.
NATIONWIDE -- Stores across the country are doing everything they can to bring in shoppers throughout Labor Day weekend.
Catchy commercials and discount deals entice shoppers, such as Rocky Barns. He usually likes to wait until the crowds clear out, but this year he couldn't wait.
"I like to come during the time when the crowds are not so great but the deals are worth the extra effort it takes to shop a crowd right now," said Barnes.
According to retail managers, the deals offered on Labor Day are similar to Black Friday.
"For appliances it's a much bigger event than Black Friday. Black Friday you are really getting into the electronics, TVs, and tablets more so stuff like that. It's probably our biggest weekend for appliances in general," said Brian Sutton, General Manager at H.H. Gregg.
The deep discounts offered by the stores are all in preparation for the upcoming holiday shopping season.
Many stores also offer extended hours to increase the holiday sales. Barnes said it's a good way to honor what the holiday truly stands for.
