Day 15 of the Paul Novak trial is over in Sullivan County Court. Novak is accused of killing his estranged wife, Catherine, five years ago. Eva McKend has been following the trial from day one and joined us with more.
SULLIVAN COUNTY, N.Y. -- When police went to arrest Scott Sherwood last year, we learned he confessed almost immediately to driving Paul Novak up to Narrowsburg on the night he allegedly killed his wife. His former colleagues at Jamaica Hospital describe him as a gentle giant, a description that aptly fits the nearly seven foot Scott Sherwood. Tuesday, a visibly fragile Sherwood took the stand, mostly talking about his history of instability.
In direct testimony, Sherwood says he never hid from his record of mental illness. The 41-year-old also recounted a history of abuse from his father and a stint at a psychiatric facility as a child.
The prosecution delved deeply into Sherwood's personal life. He has bi polar disorder and is on several medications that lead to drowsiness. At one point, he got suspended for falling asleep on the job.
The defense established that a bond formed between Sherwood and Novak when the two would bash their estranged wives. Sherwood also spoke about Novak's profile on the adult web site, Adult Friend Finder, a detail Novak's ex-girlfriend Michelle LaFrance also spoke about at length in her testimony.
