LATHAM, N.Y. -- National Guard Soldiers said goodbye to family and friends during a farewell ceremony on Saturday.
The 180 soldiers were officially mobilized at the ceremony at Shaker High School. The 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade and Company A 3rd Battalion 142nd Aviation are heading to Fort Hood before being deployed to Kuwait.
The soldiers will provide Army aviation support to American forces stationed in Kuwait. One officer said he feels like it is his duty to continue to enlist and serve his country.
"It's part of being American, they call it selfless service and it truly is because you put a lot aside in your life and rearrange your life so you can do this," said Edward DeGuisto, Brigade Safety Officer.
The soldiers will be on active duty for 12 months and spend about nine months in Kuwait.
