In the Republican primary for Saratoga County Sheriff, Michael Zurlo is declaring victory in the race. However, his opponent Jeff Gildersleeve is saying not so fast. YNN's Matt Hunter has more on the race that's just too close to call.
SARATOGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- After more than two hours after the polls closed, Michael Zurlo declared victory in the Republican primary for Saratoga County Sheriff.
The Stillwater resident with more than 30 years of law enforcement experience lead opponent Jeff Gildersleeve by just 407 votes.
"I'm excited, I'm excited about the next couple of months and still going out to meet the residents of Saratoga County, seeing what their needs are and going onto victory in November," said Zurlo.
His lead is hardly set in stone, with 537 uncounted absentee ballots as of Tuesday afternoon.
With the margin so close, Gildersleeve isn't ready to cede victory.
"Considering the fact that this has been a complete grassroots effort, the fact that we virtually had a tie with my opponent, I think that's phenomenal," noted Gildersleeve.
The two candidates had similar platforms. They each opposed the controversial SAFE Act and both expressing a desire to modernize the department.
Gildersleeve said, "I think I'm the guy to get the job done, to bring the sheriff's office into this century and out protecting the people of Saratoga County."
"That was my plan back in April when we first started this, you know, look at the at the technology issues there at the department and improve on them," added Zurlo.
With the local GOP's primary voters split almost down the middle for the second year in a row, committee members will have to work hard before November to bring everyone in the party behind one candidate.
"I think once the primary's over and we have a clear winner, I think the majority of people will come back and support the winner of the primary, in this case Mike Zurlo," explained John Herrick, Saratoga County Republican Committee Chairman.
Zurlo said, "Whatever way I can to reach to them, to let them know what my message is, I'll try to do that."
