The New York State Mega Millions has made some changes that could help or hurt your chances of winning. YNN's Karen Tararache has both the good and bad news.
NATIONWIDE -- "Went to the doctors and everything turned out all right and my wife said, your luck is changing you better buy a lottery ticket," John Weidman said.
Dennis Coletta said he plays, "For the chance to win just like everybody else!"
The reasons to play may be different, but the goal remains the same.
"Right now its $55 million, some people aren't interested. I would be interested in $55 million, I would be interested in a million dollars," said New York Lottery Acting Director Gardner Gurney.
Billions of Mega Millions Tickets are sold in 45 jurisdictions across the nation, but now the game is changing.
"Second prize which is just matching five numbers is now a million dollars rather than $250,000, and if you wager an extra dollar on that purchase, that one million could be as much as five million dollars," Gurney said.
Weidman added, "That's great, that's fantastic I'm glad that they changed and I hope that it brings me some luck today."
"Overall odds went from one in forty to one in 14.7," Gurney explained. "The odds of winning the jackpot go from 175 million to one to 259 million to one so that is more difficult."
As the cost of a Mega ticket holds steady at one dollar, so does the hope.
"Well you know what, if I could just win a million I'd be happy," Weidman said.
