ALBANY, N.Y. -State Police have released the name of the man who died in a tractor trailer accident on the Thruway early Friday morning.
Police say 45-year-old Jeffrey Schertzer of Pennsylvania was killed. The incident happened just after 3 a.m. Friday morning beyond exit 23.
Lanes were closed between exits 24 and 22 in the southbound direction as crews cleaned up and investigated what happened.
Troopers say it appears this was a tragic accident.
"The preliminary investigation seemed is that the driver pulled to the shoulder of the road for some reason and mechanically or some equipment malfunctioned and it appears the truck started while he was out of the vehicle started southbound and it did run over him," said New York State Police Sergeant Tom Ferritto.
Police say the tractor trailer continued into the median and then stopped. They say no other cars were involved, and no one else was hurt.
