Well it's time to start stocking up on candy for the incoming trick or treaters. And while many people skip the specialty candy shops, our Maria Valvanis explains how one Capital Region store is still getting in on the holiday action.
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- It's a day to celebrate some good old fashioned candy, but most people aren't spending the big bucks on sweets for trick or treaters. Instead they're stocking up on the biggest, cheapest, bag of candy available. So what does that leave for speciality shops like Uncle Sam's Candy in Schenectady?
"We get a lot of routine customers that use Uncle Sam's as a family tradition," said Erin Bagdriwicz.
Customers like Mary Zeno, stop at the store every holiday to get those homemade treats you can't find anywhere else. "My son grew up with it so at 18 years old he still loves it," Zeno said.
And even though he's away at college, Mom's not breaking her tasty tradition. "It will be a surprise I'm going to mail it to him and he'll get it hopefully by Thursday," said Zeno.
Something else you can't get from most grocery stores or conveinent shops, a free sample to help you choose which tasty treat to buy.
Christina Colamarino said, "Apples are the biggest seller we have going on right now. We have a lot of different things to choose from. We have our caramel dipped ones, we have the ghost and ghouls ones, and fall festive ones."
"They use our stuff as a little center piece if they have people over, we have a lot of leafs and pumpkins that people put on plates," said Bagdriwicz.
But don't worry trick or treaters, Uncle Sam's has something for you too! Stop by anytime between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday and pick up your free piece of Halloween candy, you won't be disappointed.
