PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Thursday to celebrate over 14 years of runway improvements at the Pittsfield Municipal Airport.
Local, state and federal officials were on hand to commemorate the completion of the runway expansion as well as the safety improvements project at the airport. They say the $13.4 million investment in the aviation infrastructure will bring jobs to the area.
"This is really about jobs and economic development. Along the runway, the more planes that can be landing here, and certainly the size of the planes can be bigger, we've seen from our economic analysis report we did two years ago that there are jobs, both direct and indirect jobs, several hundred attached to this airport as there are across the state," said Richard Davey, Department of Transportation Secretary and CEO.
Officials say by increasing the length of the runway, they are giving pilots more comfort and increasing safety.
