ROTTERDAM, N.Y. -- Fire crews spent much of the evening Thursday at 562 Duanesburg Road, fighting flames to get to an elderly man inside his home.
"Upon arrival, they had a very well-involved structure. Also, there was a report of a victim inside. Fire department members made entry, found the victim on the first floor, brought him out and the paramedics worked on him and took him to Ellis Hospital," said Schenectady County Fire Coordinator John Nuzbeck.
Neighbors at the scene say the situation seemed grave.
"They had oxygen tanks on him and he honestly didn't look that good," said neighbor Robert Carter.
Rotterdam police say the owner of the home, John Trowbridge, 71, died. When crews found him, he was unconscious, but had a pulse. After arriving at Ellis Hospital, Trowbridge died from his injuries.
No one else was hurt.
