Orange County Executive Ed Diana is recovering after surgery for a liver transplant. County leaders gave an update on his condition Sunday afternoon. YNN's Jessica Chen filed the following report.
GOSHEN, N.Y. -- A room full of Orange County leaders and legislators delivered an update Sunday on County Executive Ed Diana's liver transplant surgery.
"Everything was a complete success. The doctors said everything went according to plan," said Steven Gross, acting County Executive while Diana recuperates.
Diana had been suffering from a nonalcoholic fatty liver for the last year and a half.
He is resting at Columbia Hospital's Critical Care recovery unit, according to Gross, after a 9 hour procedure. Diana's family said he is now awake and talking.
"Some things are above politics, and obviously the health of the County Executive is of paramount importance, politics aside," said Orange County Minority Leader Jeffrey Berkman.
Diana's surgery comes at a time when the county is finalizing its budget for next year. But despite Diana's absence, officials don't anticipate any slow-downs. Gross said they've been preparing for this transition for a year.
"The budget is underway and the county will continue to move forward," said Gross.
And in the end, county leaders echoed one another with well wishes for Diana and his family.
"It's just a great day that Ed Diana has his liver," said Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois.
Gross said Ed Diana is expected to spend two to three weeks in the hospital to recover.
