ULSTER, N.Y. -- Some firefighters in Ulster received recognition on Saturday for their dedication to the volunteer department.
A plaque to honor the truck committee was unveiled for Ulster Hose Company 5. The plaque was mounted on a brand new fire engine.
Company 5 currently has 90 active members that respond to as many as four calls per day. Fire Chief Sam Appa said the new engine cost about $600,000.
"Custom built versus something commercial built comes down to safety. And when you build something specifically to your needs with the safety of the members in mind that's why we build our apparatus customely for what we need here," explained Appa.
Appa said the company's new truck is being used as a template for for specific uses at other departments. He said it is the first of its kind in the northeast.
