KAUNEONGA LAKE, N.Y. -- It was a day many residents in the Town of Bethel have been looking forward too.
"Today was the culmination of a whole year of anticipation, everyone is just so happy," said Ann Marie Hegarty, a fourth generation Smallwood resident.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan is in town helping the congregation at St. Anne of the Lake church celebrate their 100 year anniversary.
"This isn't work, this is a joy," said Cardinal Dolan.
There were no seats in the mass that was led by the Cardinal.
Pastor John Tran of St. Anne of the Lake church said it was two years in the making for Cardinal Dolan to attend Sunday's celebration. He said he approached the Cardinal two years ago and invited him to St. Anne of the Lake.
"The community here is like a family, they're close together and they live around here, not for a few years, but back to their parents, great grandparents," said Pastor Tran.
Built in 1913, the land in which St. Anne of the Lake sits was donated by Timothy Driscoll. The construction was financed by John Dillon. St. Anne of the Lake is named after the grandmother of Jesus.
"I always try to get up here North because I love this part of the Archdiocese in New York," said Cardinal Dolan.
After mass, members of the church made their way to the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts for a celebratory dinner.
