Some scary moments for people at Benedict Park in the Town of Montgomery after police say a man drove his car toward two people sitting on a bench in the park before attacking one of them. Jessica Chen has more.
MONTGOMERY, N.Y. -- It's a park popular among local parents, especially with the Schaefer family.
"It’s nice the way the park is set up. You can let your kids run 'cause it’s gated," said Erich Schaefer.
But police said Benedict Farm Park in Montgomery was the scene of a violent attack Wednesday afternoon.
"There was a report that there was an incident up there and that someone was injured," said Michael Hayes, the Town's Supervisor.
According to police, Eric Schmidt , 51, and Jennifer Tranchini, 39, was sitting at a picnic table when a car, driven by Anthony Tranchini, 46, headed straight towards them. Officers said Tranchini then got out of his car and started hitting Schmidt.
"This is serious and it’s never happened before in the whole history of any parks that the town has," said Hayes.
Schmidt, who police said was seriously hurt, is being treated at the Westchester Medical Center. The woman was not hurt.
Tranchini now faces several charges, including attempted murder.
While police said it's unclear what sparked the violent attack, the Schaefer family said they're now careful in where they bring their kids.
"I really wouldn't expect it to happen twice," said Schaefer.
