A local paramedic is accused of burglarizing homes he responded to for emergency calls. German Lobaton is accused of targeting a number of homes throughout the region. Our Alexandra Weishaupt spoke with one of his alleged victims.
WAWARSING, N.Y. -- “The most horrifying part of it is that my home built with my own hands, it’s a log home, three years of work to build it, some guy comes walking through it that has no right to be there,” said Karl Henkel. “That really bothers me.”
An invasion of privacy and a robbery to top it off as nearly $20,000 worth of property was stolen from Karl Henkel’s home by longtime medical technician German Lobaton.
“Once the victim and family have been transported to the hospital, he saw the opportunity to return to the residences knowing that they would be unoccupied and easy to enter and would steal the items from within,” said New York State Police Lt. Michael Drake.
According to police, that’s just what happened to Henkel when his wife took a fall in their home and Lobaton arrived with the medical squad. When returning to their Wawarsing residence a short time later, they noticed jewelry, electronics, money and weapons were gone.
“I was really concerned with the fact that my firearms that are mine, bought and paid for, were out on the streets someplace,” said Henkel. “That was beyond me.”
It was the third burglary of its kind reported to police in the past two months. When investigators began looking at the circumstances surrounding the crimes they realized the “common denominator” was Lobaton, who had responded to emergency calls at each of the homes.
“From there were able to locate Mr. Lobaton and then executed a search warrant of his residence and able to uncover numerous items of stolen property,” said Drake.
It's property that victims, like Henkel, are looking forward to recovering.
Lobaton is scheduled to return to court on November 15th. Anyone with information is urged to contact State Police at (845) 626-2800.
