A plea deal is reached in the case involving in a fatal hit and run accident in the Town of Woodbury. YNN's Meredith Zaritheny has more.
ORANGE COUNTY, N.Y. -- "The reckless operation of that vehicle caused you to make contact with Melissa Rupa and Rafaelito DeJesus and that collision between your vehicle and their bodies cause their death. Do you admit to that?" asked Judge Jeffrey G. Berry, Orange County Court.
"Yes," said Luis Munoz.
Through an interpreter, Luis Munoz, 25, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide in Orange County Court Thursday. Munoz admitting that back in June, he was driving drunk on the Thruway in the Town of Woodbury when he hit a motorcycle, killing Rafaelito DeJesus, 23, and Melissa Rupa, 25.
"To be deported, to come back to our country and God forbid kill someone else’s children makes no sense," said Cathy Donlon, mother of Melissa Rupa.
Munoz, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador, police say had a blood alcohol level of 0.15 percent, which is twice the legal limit at the time of the crash. Police say Munoz left the scene, but officers caught up with him a short time later and he was arrested.
"I feel like he's getting away with the murder of two people. I mean, it just doesn't make any sense," said Alyssa Krzyzanowski, Melissa Rupa's friend.
As part of the plea deal Munzo will serve between six to 18 years in prison. But friends and family say for them the punishment doesn't fit the crime.
"He killed two innocent people. There is no amount of time, they were 23 and 25, what amount of time is justice? There is none, there just isn't," said Donlon.
Munoz will be sentenced in Orange County Court on November 8th.
