KINGSTON, N.Y. -- Many people from outside the area spend their weekends in the Hudson Valley, but a special group got the red-carpet treatment this holiday weekend.
Kingston played host to Warrior Weekend 2013. It's an event aimed at giving injured veterans a little rest, relaxation and recognition for their efforts.
Six veterans and their wives made the trip up from Fort Belvoir, Virginia this weekend. Organizers said it's the locals who really make the weekend special for the visiting veterans.
"We do 7 or 8 of these a year, but the reception we get up here in Kingston is second to none," said Warrior Weekend Program Manager Jim Lafferty.
"These vets totally understand it. They didn't expect the welcome that Ulster County gives them. They just love Ulster County," said Kingston Warrior Weekend Chairman Vince Auletta.
As part of the weekend's events, the vets and their families took a foliage tour and a boat ride on the Hudson before taking in Sunday's Italian Fest in Kingston.
