WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Lighting around the construction zone of the Tappan Zee Bridge is being rearranged to make it safer for boaters.
Officials say the navigation lights are being moved from their current location at the footings of the twin spans of the bridge, about 900 feet apart.
At their new location, the lights will be 300 feet closer on each side of the navigation channel, marking it more clearly for boats.
The changes come after a boat crashed into a barge near the bridge back in July, killing two people and injuring four others. The victims' families say they couldn't see the barge in the dark.
Since the crash, more lights have been added to equipment near the bridge.
